Details of Rhodes University Postdoctoral Research Fellowships.

Applications are open for the Rhodes University Postdoctoral Research Fellowships 2025. The University Council has established several Rhodes University Postdoctoral Research Fellowships across all faculties, which may be awarded for one year with the possibility of renewal.

The fellowships are intended to foster existing research and scholarly or creative activities within Rhodes University departments and institutes. Ideally, a fellow’s proposed work will closely complement existing programs in the host department.

Fellowship

  • Each fellowship comprises a total package of R180,000 per annum, with an additional allocation of up to R20,000 available to support the presentation of papers at formal conferences. It’s important to note that the fellowship cannot be concurrently held with any supplementary funding.
Eligibility Criteria:
  • While there is no age restriction, prospective Fellows must possess a doctoral degree obtained within the last five years, preferably from an institution other than Rhodes University. The degree should be recognized as suitable for the discipline applying for the Fellowship. Selection is based on exceptional merit, demonstrated through the quality and body of publications or other recognized achievements relevant to the Fellow’s discipline. Merit is the sole criterion for awarding the fellowship.
  • Applicants who haven’t completed their PhD at the time of the fellowship offer must have submitted their PhD thesis by the end of 2025. In such cases, the Research Office requires written assurance from the applicant’s supervisor, confirming a reasonable expectation of the doctoral degree being awarded.
  • Applications should be submitted through Heads of Departments or Directors of Research Institutes.
Conditions of the Award:
  • The University expects due acknowledgment, including full affiliation to Rhodes University, on all publications, creative works, and other academic products resulting from the Fellowship. The University reserves the right to co-ownership of inventions and/or patents directly arising from research conducted under the fellowship’s sponsorship.
  • The University retains the right to request a refund of any fellowship payments if the Fellow terminates the contract before its completion.

Application

Applications for the Fellowships should be made through the potential host department and then directed to the Research Office (research-admin@ru.ac.za). The determination of awards will be made by a committee comprising the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Development (Chair), the Director: Research Office and Faculty Deans.
